A Texas
Department of Public Safety letter, dated May 3, 2002, states that the I-797
document, if accompanied by picture ID, meets the current identification requirements
for Texas
drivers license issuance. Michael Anderson, the Chief of
Driver License Division of Texas Department
of Public Safety in this letter responded the inquiry from an attorney at
law concerning this Department's position on the Immigration and Naturalization
Service I-94 form when attached to an I-797 document. The letter
states: "After careful consideration of all relevant issues
we have determined that the I-797 document, if accompanied by picture ID in the
form of a passport or USCIS identification document, meets the current identification
requirements for the issuance of a Texas driver license or identification certificate.
All field offices captains have been made aware of this decision and will provide
this information to all Driver
License Offices in their region. It will also be included in future training
sessions and procedural instructions." Please click
