On August 9th, 2021, The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that those who are applying for lawful permanent resident status can also apply for a social security number at the same time. Previously, social security numbers can only be applied and obtained through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Often times, this could result in an additional lengthy process costing additional time for LPR applicants. Now, USCIS and SSA have worked together to provide a more streamlined service to save time and money.

This change is done through the new I-485 form. USCIS modified the I-485 form to apply for permanent residency to include additional questions necessary to apply for a social security number. After approval of the I-485 case, USCIS will electronically send the information to SSA, where they will assign a social security number or replacement card to the applicant. This change will not increase filing fee costs for applicants.
