Department of Homeland Security Ends Upcoming Affidavit of Support Rule
In October 2020, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed a rule that certain immigrants are required to submit an Affidavit of Support. The proposed rule seeks to expand evidentiary requirements for those who wish to sponsor an immigrant, including requiring higher income and more proving documents.
On March 19th, 2021, DHS have announced the withdraw of this proposed rule, to remain more in line with the more immigration friendly Biden Administration. DHS cited the increased financial burden and barriers as reasons to remove the proposed rule. Over the past 4 years, the Trump administration have implemented various barriers to legal immigration. As the U.S continues under the Biden administration, we can foresee the repeal of these Trump-era policies. The legal immigration landscape will likely be more akin to that of the Obama-era.
