On December 8th, 2015, the House of Representative passed changes to the 30 year old visa waiver program to increase U.S security on the heel of recent terror attacks in Paris and California with a vote of 407 to 19. “The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States without a visa for stays of 90 days or less”. Changes to this program include barring anyone who are from Iraq, Syria, Iran, or Sudan, or have visited those countries since 2011. Moreover, this bill will mandate additional security protocols with the 38 countries that are eligible under the Visa Waiver Program.

Although a vote in the Senate has not been scheduled, it is likely a version will pass as it has received wide bipartisan support. Furthermore, President Obama also called for stricter restrictions regarding the visa wavier program during his Oval Office Address.
