On August 31, 2015, USCIS announced a new simpler process to pay immigrant fees online. Compared to the previous payment process, the new process requires less information and allows anyone to pay the fee as long as they provide the pertinent Alien Registration Number or DOS Case ID. Some exceptions to this fee are people who are special immigrants from Iraqi and Afghan, children who enter the country under the orphan of Hague adoption program, and K nonimmigrants.

USCIS states the $165 immigrant fee is required “to process your immigrant visa packet and produce your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)”. The only payment method is through the new USCIS Electronic Immigration System.

To pay your immigrant fee, you would first need to receive information from an U.S embassy or consulate in the form of an A number, DOS ID, Instructions from USCIS, and Visa packet/ Immigrant Data Summary. Then log in at http://www.u scis.gov/uscis-elis and select USCIS Immigrant Fee from the chart. Input your A number and DOS case ID. Enter the valid payment information in the form of a credit card, debit card, pre-paid debit card, or U.S bank account.

Please note that failure to pay within the time frame listed on the notice does not change your status as a lawful permanent resident. Failure to pay will prevent the shipment of your physical green card. To track your green card, please select “Check My Case Status” at http://www.uscis.gov/.
