DHS Releases Lawful Permanent Resident 2013 Statistics
The Department of Homeland Security recently released general statistics on lawful permanent resident (LPR) for the fiscal year of 2013. LPR is defined as a “person who has been granted lawful permanent residence in the United States.”
In 2013, there was a total of 990,553 people who become LPR. Out of these residents, 54% were already living in the U.S when they were granted LPR status, 66% were granted LPR status based on a family relationship with a U.S citizen or LPR.
In comparison with 2012 and 2011 statistics, the number of LPR in 2013 was lower. LPR adjustments of status decreased by 16,757 from 2012 and new arrival LPR’s decreased by 24,321. DHS further reported that although there was a slight decrease in 2013, there has been a generally upward trend since 1945, from 250,000 in the 1950’s to more than 1 million in the 2000’s.
In 2013, 66% of LPR’s were family sponsored. Of the family sponsored LPR’s, 57% were immediate relative LPRs, 27% were parents of U.S citizens, and 16% consisted of children of U.S citizens. While family sponsored LPR’s were the most popular, 16% of LPR’s were employment based, 4.6% were based on diversity programs, and 12% were refugees and asylees. Of the employment based LPR’s, 39% were in the second preference (professionals with advanced degrees), 27% were in the third preference (skilled, professionals, and unskilled workers), and 24% were in the first preference (priority workers).
Out of all the LPR’s in 2013, 40% were from Asia and 32% from North America. The leading countries the 2013 LPR’s were born in are Mexico (13.6%), China (7.2%), India (6.9%), Philippines (5.5%) and the Dominican Republic (4.2%). The most popular states of residence for the 2013 LPR’s are California (19.4%), New York (13.5%), Florida (10.4%), Texas (9.4%) and New Jersey (5.4%).
DHS also released demographics for 2013 lawful permanent residents. The median age for 2013 LPRs was 32 years old. Females accounted for 52% of the LPR’s with males constituting 43.8%. Of the 990,553 newly LPR in 2013, 35.9% were single while 58.5% were married. The median age of the newly LPR is lower than that of the U.S native population. The female to male ratio of LPR’s is almost identical to that of the U.S population but new LPRs saw a higher percentage in marital status than the average U.S population, 58% compared to 38%.
