Validity Period Changes to Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record (I-693)

On May 30, 2014, USCIS changed its policy on the validity of medical examinations due to concerns raised by CDC. Via a memo sent by USCIS, it states “USCIS is revising its policy relating to the validity of the medical examination report submitted by the applicant, to include discontinuing the annual extension policy.” This policy change becomes effective on June 1, 2014 and will affect any I-693 filed on or after that date. From June 1st, I-693 will be considered valid as long as it is within one year of the civil surgeon signature date.

The I-693 form, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, is generally used while filing for adjustment of status. The examination is required to establish that the applicant is not inadmissible to the United States based on medical reasons.

I-693 has been required to be filed with the adjustment of status together for a few years. Now per this change, I-693 is not required as initial evidence and will be accepted after the initial filing as long as it is before adjudication. In the event it was not filed concurrently USCIS advises “applicants to wait until USCIS requests the medical examination report before submitting it”.

More information can be found about this change at the USCIS website: http://www.uscis.gov/policymanual/HTML/PolicyManual-Volume8-PartB-Chapter4.html.
