Student and Exchange Visitor Program Releases Quarterly Review for April 2014
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) have recently released the general summary quarterly review for April 2014. The Student and Exchange Visitor Program is a part of the National Security Investigations Division and seek to provide information on nonimmigrant students in the United States.
According to the latest data released, there are currently 1,015,178 students studying in the U.S under the F-1 and M-1 visas. In addition, there are currently 188,382 J-1 visitors in the U.S. Of the 1,015,179 F and M students, 29% are from China and 56% are males. Since January 2014, the total number of nonimmigrant students, exchange visitors and their dependents has increase 2.68%. The top countries with the highest amount of students using F-1 and M-1 visas are from China (290, 133), India (113,813), South Korea (91,583), Saudi Arabia (72,223), Japan (26,185), Taiwan (23,309), and Vietnam (20,832).
There are currently 8,930 SEVP certified schools in the U.S and 77% of the schools have between 0 to 50 F and M students enrolled. 72% of all active F and M students are enrolled in bachelors, masters or doctoral programs. 27% of all SEVP certified schools are located in CA, NY and FL. Of the certified schools, 84% are F schools, 6% are M schools, and 10% accept both F & M visas. The top majors for F & M students are Business, Engineering, Basic skill and Developmental/ Remedial Education, Computer and Information Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences, High School/Secondary Diplomas and Certificates, Visual and Performing Arts, Social Sciences, Health Professions, Biological and Biomedical Services, Physical Sciences, and Mathematics. Of the education level of F & M students, the most popular are Bachelor’s (335,609), Master’s (265,210), Doctorate (129,396), Language Training (99,165), Associate (77,826), Secondary (53,292), and Other (38,973).
Out of all F & M students, 351, 397 or 35% study in the STEM fields. The top 10 STEM Degrees among F & M students are Engineering (150,640), Computer and information Sciences (74,691), Biological and Biomedical Sciences (36,692), Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Engineering Technologies and Engineering related fields, Business Management, marketing and related support services, Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies, Health Professions and related programs, and Agriculture and Agriculture related sciences. The top three states that hosts the greatest number of F & M STEM students are California (46,816), New York (31,735), and Texas (31,538).
