International Visitation Is Up 10% in March 2013
According to an article recently published on the website of the U.S. Office of Travel & Tourism Industries, the U.S. Department of Commerce has announced that 5.8 million international visitors traveled to the U.S. in March of 2013. This number represents a 10 percent increase from the number of visitors to U.S. in March of 2012. March 2013 was the 24th straight month of increased total international visits to the U.S. Non-resident visits from overseas countries, totaling 2.5 million, were up 12 percent compared to March 2012, and accounted for 44 percent of all international visits to the U.S. For the first three months of 2013, international visits, totaling 15 million, were up 6 percent compared to the same time period in 2012. In addition, during these first three months of 2013, non-resident visits from overseas countries, totaling 6.6 million, were up 9 percent compared to the same period of 2012, and accounted for 44 percent of total international visits to the U.S.
Visitors from Canada and Mexico continue to lead the number of international visits to the U.S. Non-resident visits from Canada and Mexico increased by 11 and 5 percent, respectively. These countries were followed by Japan, with an increase of visitors of 7 percent, the U.K., with an of 2 percent, Germany, with an increase of 4 percent, Brazil, with an increase of 27 percent, France, with an increase of 10 percent, China, with an increase of 21 percent, South Korea, with an increase of 6 percent, and Australia, with an increase of 7 percent.
During the first three months of 2013, visitation through the top 15 ports of entry accounted for 85 percent of all overseas visits. This statistic remained the same from 2012. Miami, New York, and Los Angeles, the top three ports of entry, accounted for 41 percent of all overseas arrivals, representing a 0.5 percent increase from the previous year. 14 of the 15 top ports of entry reported increases in arrivals during the first three months of 2013, and 7 of these ports reported double-digit increases in arrivals.
