A Wire Transfer of $150,000 to Zhang & Associates

Several days ago, our firm received a wire transfer of $150,000. There was no reference in the receipt except a name. Our accountant then looked up the name on our customer relationship management (CRM) system and found out that the name in the reference belongs to one of our EB-5 clients.

To our surprise, the clients claimed that he had no acquaintance with the sender and thus denied the possession of that $150,000. We were pretty confident that the transfer was not for our attorney fee since it was obviously way too much and the client had already made the initial payment. Thus, the situation that we were left with was an unclaimed amount of $150,000 in our bank account.

Fortunately, the client later contacted us saying that there was a misunderstanding between himself and his friend who wired the money. After confirming with the sender, our staff immediately sent back the transfer. (By the way, the transaction fee of the wiring was the highest one we had ever seen.)

It is very important to double check the account number of the receiver, especially when you are wiring money transnationally. If the account number is wrong and the money eventually goes to the account of another person or company, then the issue will become very complex and difficult to correct. The sender’s bank needs the information from both the receiver and the receiver’s bank to retrieve the money for you. If the wrong receiver decides to keep the money, there are not too many options left besides a transnational legal procedure, which is often highly expensive and inefficient.
