Student and Exchange Visitor Program Released Quarterly Review of F-1 and M-1 Statistics

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement which monitors student and exchange visitors, has released a general summary quarterly review for the latest quarter which ended on June 30th, 2013.

According to the data released, 9,522 school programs have been approved by SEVP. There are 894,826 active students using F-1 and M-1 visas and 89,315 dependent students using F-1 and M-1 visas. 1,890,942 F-1 and M-1 student visas have been completed.

36% of all SEVP approved schools are located within the states of California, New York, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. The top five F-1 and M-1 approved schools are: 1) Cornell University (4,635 active students); 2) Houston Community College System (3,271); 3) Santa Monica College (3,253); 4) The University of Iowa (2,971); 5) Northern Virginia Community College (2,085). The top five F-1 approved schools are: 1) University of Southern California (9,329 active students); 2) The City University of New York (8,940); 3) Purdue University (8,863); 4) University of Illinois (8,320); 5) Columbia University (8,015). The top five M-1 approved schools are: 1) TransPac Aviation Academy (403 active students); 2) Orlando Flight Training (289); 3) CAE Global Academy Phoenix, Inc. (260); 4) U.S. Aviation Academy (234); 5) Dean International, Inc (230). 19 schools have over 5,000 active students, 182 schools have between 1,001 to 5,000 students, and 169 schools have between 501-1,000 students.

The top ten countries or regions with the highest number of active students using F-1 and M-1 visas included: 1) China (233,992 active students); 2) India (96,674); 3) South Korea (91,677); 4) Saudi Arabia (61,944); 5) Canada (28,857); 6) Japan (25,721); 7) Taiwan (22,961); 8) Vietnam (17,816); 9) Mexico (16,577); 10) Brazil (14,522). The top ten majors included Business (with 184,393 student majors), Engineering (129,110), Basic Skills and Developmental/Remedial Education (83,654), Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services (60,191), Liberal Arts and Sciences/General Studies and Humanities (41,559), Visual and Performing Arts (39,842), Social Sciences (38,074), Health Professions and Related Programs (37,336), Biological and Biomedical Sciences (34,247), and High School/Secondary Diplomas and Certificates (31,963).

California (with 145,814 active students), New York (with 105,921 active students), Texas (with 64,976 active students), Massachusetts (with 53,095 active students), Florida (with 40,282 active students), Illinois (with 40,130 active students), and Pennsylvania (with 37,118 active students) have the highest number of active F-1 and M-1 students. Together these states host 54% of all active students.

SEVP also released level of education and course of study information. 72% of active students are enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral programs. 292,660 students are enrolled in Bachelor’s programs, 227,502 students are enrolled in Master’s programs, and 123,951 students are enrolled in Doctorate programs. Other programs in which students are enrolled include Language Training (with 93,678 students enrolled), Associate programs (70,877) and “Other” programs (37,074). In addition, 35,675 students are enrolled in Secondary Education programs, 5,724 students are enrolled in Flight Training programs, 4,951 students are enrolled in Primary Education programs, 2,550 are enrolled in “Other Vocational School” programs, and 177 are enrolled in High School programs. SEVP also notes that approved schools may offer several levels of education.
