Support the September 18th Immigration Rally in D.C.

For the last several years, comprehensive immigration reform and legislation have been hot topics on Capital Hill. Unfortunately, the comprehensive immigration reform bill failed again in the Senate this summer. However, advocates of comprehensive immigration reform will never stop their efforts to progress reform and force legislation through various methods, including protests, lobbying, and gaining support through publicity and the media.

Zhang & Associates, P.C. has also been actively supporting comprehensive immigration reform for several months and exploring various avenues to influence policy.  For example, Z&A set up an “Immigration Reform” webpage on our company site in order to aid people in contacting their congressmen and senators about the issue and the need for serious reform. Moreover, our firm recently made a modest donation of $2,000 to support the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)’s Legal Action Center and a $1,000 modest donation for its New York Immigrant Achievement Awards.

Immigration Voice—a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing delays and other major flaws in the employment-based immigration process—is organizing a rally in Washington, D.C. on September 18th, 2007 and other lobbying activities during that week. The purpose of the rally is for the legal, highly skilled and educated immigrants to be seen and make their voices heard by lawmakers on Capital Hill as well as media outlets from all over the nation. The planned rally on September 18 will protest Congressional inaction on the issue of H-1B visa shortage and processing backlogs for highly-skilled legal immigrants. It proposes the increase of H-1B quota and calls on law-makers to lift the employment-based immigration visa cap and break the 7% annual nation quota, which is the main reason for the big backlogs in the visa bulletin for Chinese- and Indian-born nationals. These proposals may remove the major obstacles to many highly-skilled immigrants’ road to legal work status and eventual permanent residence in this country.

Besides the protest, Immigration Voice will also organize a lobby day on Sept 17 to help participants meet their congressman/congresswoman and senators, personally.

Information about the rally and the schedule can be found at this link: http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12749

Moreover, Legalimmigrant.org, a non-profit organization organized by Chinese non-immigrants, is also helping to organize the rally. For more information about Legalimmigrant.org, please kindly click http://www.legalimmigrant.org

Too often the media and the legislative system have only focused on the issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants have demonstrated their influence through protests over the last few years, and it is now our time to be heard. Many foreign nationals have come to this nation legally, played by the rules, followed the immigration procedures to maintain legal status, and waited patiently to get their immigration petitions approved. However, we have been adversely affected by the visa bulletin retrogression, H-1B cap crisis, and other flaws in the green card application process. We need to act now, and stand up and be heard by the legislators who have the power to affect the outcome of our status and our lives.

Zhang & Associates believes that the best solution to fix these issues in the immigration system is through the actions by legal immigrants, immigration attorneys and the general public. Our firm supports this rally. Mr. Matthew Graham, Attorneys Bennett Wisniewski and Jerry Zhang, from Zhang & Associates will meet Congressmen and Senators in Washington, D.C as well as attend the rally. We are calling for immigration attorneys around the country to support these lobbying efforts and attend these congressional meetings and the rally. We also suggest that you attend these lobbying efforts and the rally. You can call, email, and/or fax your representatives to schedule meetings with them or their staff.
