AILA’s 2009 National Day of Action

The American Immigration Lawyer’s Association (AILA) will hold its National Day of Action on Thursday, March 19, 2009 as a part of is ongoing commitment to educate Congress about the issues of the US immigration system and push for more effective immigration legislation and reform.

The National Day of Action, held in Washington, D.C. brings together AILA members, other attorneys and concerned community members to discuss and collaborate on the various aspects of immigration law. Day of Action attendees will also be given the opportunity to speak with members of Congress and congressional staff in hopes of promoting a number of issues, such as increasing the number of green cards available for employment based immigration, reforming the annual nationality based immigrant visa number caps, improving USCIS efficiency, ending the practice of “visa waste”, and extending premium processing.

At Zhang & Associates, P.C., we are committed to providing our clients the highest level of service possible for all of their immigration-related needs. As part of this continual endeavor, we have committed to lobbying for sound immigration laws and policies. We believe it should be a priority to promote better awareness of immigration laws and push for legislative solutions to key immigration issues.

This year, two of our New York based attorneys, Mr. Jian Joe Zhou and Mr. Bennett Wisniewski will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the AILA Day of Action. For the past several weeks, Mr. Zhou and Mr. Wisniewski have been reaching out to members of Capital Hill in anticipation of this important lobbying day.

Over the past few years, we have been actively involved in many lobbying efforts, advocating for important issues like the resumption of Premium Processing for Employment-Based Immigration Petitions and H-1B reform. In September 2007, three members of Zhang & Associates, including Attorney Jerry Zhang and Mr. Wisiniewski arranged a special trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers and discuss clients’ concerns. They met with then-Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton’s Chief Legal Consul and Chief Legislative Consul, Representative Zoe Lofgren—widely believed to have played a critical role in fixing the visa bulletin fiasco of July 2007—and other Congressmen and women, focusing on three main issues: the H-1B quota, visa retrogression for aliens born in China and India, and adjustment of status delays due to FBI name checks.

Though the United States is currently in the midst of a recession, many in the immigrant and immigration law community feel strongly that it is still important to push for immigration reform. While it is likely that no major breakthroughs will occur in the immediate future, it is nevertheless important to continue to push and sow the seeds for the future in anticipation of economic recovery.

We urge other immigration attorneys to take part in these lobbying efforts and ask that our readers, whether our clients or not, encourage their attorneys to get involved. AILA has also organized Local National Day of Action events around the country on March 19 to allow everyone participate.
