Address Change Reminder Memo

In January 2009, Attorney Jerry Zhang, received a call from a USCIS officer about a home address change that one of his clients requested for a pending adjustment of status (I-485) application.

The client had asked CIS to update his current home address since he and his wife had moved to a new home in the same city. He successfully updated his address for his I-485 case. However, the client forgot about his wife’s I-485, which was based on his NIW  approval. So the USCIS officer contacted Mr. Zhang regarding the couple’s current marital status. The Officer wondered whether the couple was still married.

When the USCIS officer called to Mr. Jerry Zhang about the issue, Mr. Zhang checked our database for the client’s address record in Oracle CRM. He found that in the records both the client and his wife had the same updated address, so he relayed the new information to the USCIS officer immediately.  Attorney Zhang thanked the Officer for his call and complimented his professional attitude.

To follow up after his call with the USCIS officer, Mr. Zhang and his assistant called the clients and requested that the clients file an address change for both of their pending I-485 cases to confirm that they were living together and remain as a husband and a wife.

We present this story to stress the importance of keeping the USCIS updated and to remind our clients that when updating their address they need to remember to update their spouse and family members’ addresses as well. All non-Citizens (including green card holders) who change addresses are required by the USCIS to report the change of address using Form AR-11 within 10 days of their move. Those with pending cases, such as a pending adjustment of status, need to update their address for the pending case as well to ensure that they receive CIS notices in a timely manner.

The USCIS offers a web-based service for completing the AR-11 and changing an address for a pending case. The online service will ask a series of questions regarding your personal information and, if applicable, your case, so you should have all your documents ready. Upon completion, you will receive a confirmation numbers, which you should keep in your records and also send to your attorney via email.  Also you should notify your attorney of your new address and phone number immediately.
