This presentation will cover visa options, with a special discussion about J visa restrictions, waivers, and permanent residency, for international physicians enrolled in Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs in the United States and physicians conducting research in lieu of/in addition to clinical work.

On Saturday, June 22, Attorney at Zhang & Associates’ Chicago Office will present a free seminar on immigration options for international physicians wishing to continue working in the United States and to evaluate their permanent residency options at the conclusion of their Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. This seminar will be very educational for international physicians currently enrolled or planning to enroll in residency, fellowship, and research programs in the United States. Presentation topics will include:

1. Visa options for U.S. residency/fellowship programs, including J-1, H-1B, and O-1 visas.
2. Obtaining waivers of the Home Residency Requirement associated with the J-1 visa, the status held by most international physicians enrolled in U.S. GME programs.
3. An overview of permanent residency options for international physicians based on clinical work in medically-underserved areas (the National Interest Waiver category) and research work.
4. Important guidelines for international physicians planning their next steps, including timelines associated with J-1 clinical waiver and permanent residency applications.
